Whatever your mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.
~ Napoleon Hill
Over the last month, I have spent a lot of time alone. My husband has been away with our son.
In my solitude, thoughts come. Some do not serve me well. I let them go.
Every morning upon awakening, I think and say the following:
Good Morning.
Today is a beautiful day of opportunity.
I am exactly where I need to be.
I open myself to the universe
and trust in the unfolding of my life.
Starting my day with these wise words sets me up for success.
Thoughts are creative. Not all thoughts are equal. But those repeated often, accompanied by strong emotions, influence our mood, affect our actions and reactions, and shape our reality.
Humans are wired to connect. But solitude can be a great teacher.
My experience with solitude has taught me that to thrive when alone, we have to have a good relationship with ourselves. Learning to like oneself means we always have good company. From this space, we can create beautiful things.
Seniors who have found themselves increasingly alone tell me they spend too much time in bed and watch too much television. Emotionally they feel sad. Physically they hurt predominantly due to sedentary behaviour. Drug ads mislead them to rely on external chemistry with adverse side effects to accomplish what connection, healthy diet, and physical movement do with side benefits. Seniors need hugs, not drugs.
Having a reason to get up in the morning will save more lives than any medical intervention.
Solitude need not feel lonely. It can be enlightening.
I leave you with the opening words of my favourite guided meditation:
Through the power of our minds, we can create prisons or palaces, wealth or poverty, joy or suffering. The thoughts and images we repeat in our minds like a personal mantra are what our very powerful minds turn into reality. This is the secret. This is the knowledge that will free your life from lack, limitation, loneliness, and fear.
