A fresh start for me in 2026

New year — a new chapter, new verse, or just the same old story? Ultimately we write it. The choice is ours.

~ Alex Morritt

After carpet-bombing my microbiome with broad-spectrum antibiotics to combat double lung pneumonia, I am in the process of building back better. I consider this to be part of a fresh start in the new year.

I have always been a minimalist when it comes to prescription drugs - especially antibiotics - but in this case, I didn't have much of a choice.

So, with an attitude of gratitude, I have reframed the loss of my old friends (gut microbes - good and bad) as a reset and opportunity to seed and feed a healthier ecology and more robust immune system.

Right now, I am especially grateful to have an intact appendix.

Modern research has revealed that the appendix, long considered to have no significant function, acts as a reservoir or "safe house" for commensal (beneficial) gut bacteria. It harbours these microbes in protective biofilms—dense, resilient layers that shield them from disruptions like diarrhea, infections, or antibiotics that can flush out the main gut flora.

After such events, bacteria from the appendix can repopulate the colon, restoring a healthy microbiome balance. This helps maintain digestion, immune function, and protection against harmful invaders.

Fortunately, since regaining my appetite, all I have craved are healthy, colourful, fresh, whole foods, including vegetables, fruits, tea, and naturally raised animal products, that help create a healthy ecology.

Happy New Year! May 2026 be filled with happiness, good health, and endless possibilities.

Wishing you all a fresh start.
